Extreme cold is feared to trigger frost over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh on both the New Year Eve and New Year Day.

Cold wave conditions would occur over these areas on Monday and Tuesday, an India Meteorological Department (IMD) update said on Sunday.

DENSE FOG

Dense fog has been forecast over east Uttar Pradesh and Bihar for Monday.

Meanwhile, on Sunday afternoon, the overnight dense fog had lifted and visibility improved to 1,000 metres over most parts of Indo-Gangetic plains.

But fog to dense fog (200 metres) hung over isolated pockets of Punjab and north Haryana.

Cold wave conditions prevailed over parts of east Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and isolated pockets of west Rajasthan and west Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile, a fresh weather-setting western disturbance would start affecting the western Himalayas later this week.

FRESH WESTERLY

This could bring back the threat of snow and rain for the higher reaches of Northwest India and fog for the plains.

Around this time in the South, a fresh easterly wave, one of which has already brought some wet weather, could bring more such to the peninsula.

Rain or thundershowers may break out over Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Monday and increase thereafter.

Ongoing rain or thundershowers over Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Lakshadweep could start losing intensity from Monday, the IMD said.

Thundershower may lash coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and Karnataka during the next two days.
