The depression in the north and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal has ramped up in strength in quick time to become a deep depression and is on course to intensify further as a tropical cyclone.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its afternoon bulletin has put out the cyclone formation alert. The system has become a numbered cyclone 02B as per global storm tracking models, the equivalent of a depression/deep depression.
The transformation of the system over the past few hours since the morning has been decisive and furious, and may have beaten the best predicitons made by global models.
The tropical cyclone in the making will likely spare the Indian coast a direct hit, and will veer towards in a northeast direction to cross the Bangladesh coast at Cox's Bazar sometime tonight, the IMD said.
