Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd has asked the Karnataka Government to earmark government land in villages to grow green fodder.
Speaking at the inauguration of the cooperative week celebration in Mangalore on Monday, Raviraj Hegde, president of the union, said that the dairy farmers in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts are facing shortage of fodder. This is affecting the production of milk in these districts.
In spite of the demand of around 4 lakh litres of milk a day, these two districts produce around 3 lakh litres a day.
The union has jurisdiction over 673 milk cooperative societies in various villages in these districts. If the Government allows the milk societies to grow fodder on the government land available in those villages, it would help mitigate one of the major problems being faced by the dairy farmers in the district, he said.
