Bandh was observed on Friday in the Konaseema area of East Godavari district in support of the paddy farmers observing crop holiday in the area.
It is estimated that in one lakh acres in the area farmers are not cultivating paddy during the kharif season, dissatisfied with the poor prices. Konaseema, it may be noted, is one of the most fertile areas in the Godavari delta known for paddy and coconut cultivation.
The Government offices, commercial establishments and and cinema halls remained closed. Farmers obstructed traffic at some places and at some places they cooked food on the roads to register their protest.
Committee
The State Government appointed a committee under the leadership of Mr Mohan Kanda, the former chief secretary, to study the issue and make recommendations to help the farmers. The committee submitted its report and the State Government is yet to act on the report.
The crop holiday issue attracted national attention and recently senior BJP leaders like Mr Rajnath Singh toured the area and expressed support to the farmers. The issue also figured in Parliament.
