The public sector FACT is importing Muriate of Potash (MOP) from Belarus through the Tuticorin port this year.
The first ship, with 27,500 tonnes of MOP, will reach the port on Tuesday night. The company has entered into a one-year contract with Belarus Kali in the erstwhile Soviet Republic for the cargo. The imported material will be sent to Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telengana from next week by rail in bags. This will be a boon to farmers all over South India as they will get both Factamfos and MOP from the same roof.
The June-July period is considered to be the peak demand period for fertilisers in southern States. The MOP from Belarus, which is coloured pink, is the preferred product for farmers all over the South.
FACT is expanding its import operations this year. Another MOP ship from Belarus will be reaching Tuticorin in August. A ship of 16-16-16 complex sourced from Russia will be arriving in Tuticorin in July.
The total value of the commodity from these three ships will be around ₹200 crore, the company said in a statement.
