Rain or thundershowers have lashed parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and adjoining East and Peninsular India, as an intense western disturbance extended its ‘limbs’ to the East and South of the country before signing out.

These ‘limbs’ were represented by troughs induced by or breaking out of it from South-East Uttar Pradesh to Chhattisgarh and from South Interior Karnataka to Lakshadweep, across Kerala.

The weather created is being attributed to interaction of opposing winds from a westerly trough associated with a prevailing western disturbance and an easterly trough.

Scattered to fairly widespread rainfall and isolated thunderstorms accompanied with hailstorms were reported from East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar on Friday; over South Chhattisgarh and the hills of Bengal and Sikkim on Saturday; and Interior Karnataka, Telangana and adjoining Coastal Andhra Pradesh on Saturday and Sunday.

Heavy rainfall was observed over the Met subdivisions of Telangana and Rayalaseema during the 24 hours ending on Monday morning, an India Met Department (IMD) update said.

Fresh westerly

Meanwhile, a fresh western disturbance and an induced cyclonic circulation, a potent combo, are expected to start affecting the hills and the adjoining plains from Tuesday. Associated moisture and cloud cover will help perk up night temperatures and briefly lift a cold wave that had set in in the vacuum left behind by the predecessor ‘intense western disturbance.

According to the IMD, the prevailing cold wave to severe cold wave conditions may continue over parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh during the next two days. Cool winds and cloudy skies had set off ‘cold day’ conditions over North-West and Central India during the past two days. This will lift gradually and day temperatures rise by 2-3 degrees from Wednesday.

The arrival of western disturbances with an assured frequency has a major role in modulating winter weather over North India by generating alternating rain/snowing conditions on the one hand and cold waves on the other.

The fresh disturbance influencing North India should throw up an offspring circulation over South Pakistan and adjoining West Rajasthan, its favourite location, and help in incremental moisture from the Arabian Sea.

According to the IMD, it would cause fairly widespread to widespread rain/snow, and even hailstorms over the hills on Wednesday and Thursday.
