New Delhi, Sept 27 The Government has allowed sugar mills to sell 4 million tonnes of the sweetener in the open market during October and November.
The open market or non-levy allocation for these two months is marginally higher than the monthly average of around 1.7 m t.
The higher quota, mainly to meet the peak festival demand during Dusshera and Diwali, may help stabilise prices that have rallied in recent months on uncertainty over next year's crop.
Sugar mills have to sell the entire non-levy quantity of 4 mt within these two months. Further, it would be mandatory for the mills to sell at least 45 per cent of the quota each month, according to a statement.
The rest 10 per cent could be sold anytime till November-end. The Government has also released a levy quota of 3.96 lakh tonnes during these months.
