Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has firmed up plans to inaugurate the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project on June 21.
According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office, Rao will visit Vijayawada and Mumbai to invite his Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra counterparts YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and Devendra Fadnavis as Chief Guests.
This pet project of Chandrasekhar Rao, once completed, is expected to change the face of Telangana and help cultivate two crops.
The mega Kaleshwaram project, which has several components, seeks to pump up huge quantities of water by using heavy duty pumps and fill up barrages specially created, for use after monsoon. The mega project seeks to utilise the flood water from river Godavari which goes untapped into the sea.
The project is being executed on a fast track mode and this component has been completed within two-and-a-half years.
Recently, the Chief Minister visited the sites and expressed the hope that the project would be commissioned shortly so that the benefits of the monsoon and flood water could benefit the State by harnessing it.
From next month-end, the government is making preparations to lift two TMCs of Godavari Water per day from Medigadda barrage. Preparations are also afoot to lift three TMCs of water from there for which the construction activity is in progress.
The Kaleshwaram Project would be able to supply sufficient irrigated water to grow two crops a year across 45 lakh acres across 16 districts in the State, known for deficit rain and poor storage facilities.
