Agri-biotech and plant breeding company Krishidhan Seeds, a developer of commercial hybrid seeds for Indian agriculture market has announced the launch of Praja, a new variety of BT cotton seed.
Praja is a Bollgard II variety of BT seed which is developed as an insect-resistant genetically modified seed having good tolerance towards major sucking pests. It promises high yields in rain-fed areas because of its deep root system and desired drought tolerance. A tall crop growth along with a medium boll size with easy picking quality, it will be available for farmers in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
India is the second largest producer of cotton in the world, after China, and has nearly 121 lakh hectares under its cultivation, which is almost a third of the land under it globally. The cotton producing states are Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana and Orissa.
