The Maharashtra government has decided to set up a seed park at Jalna in the central region of the State. The decision to set up the seed park at an investment of ₹110 crore was taken on Tuesday at the State Cabinet meeting.

Jalna has been chosen for setting up the park because the region already has a well-established seed industry having a yearly turnover of ₹3,000 crore.

More than 20,000 farmers are involved in the process with an annual income close to ₹250 crore, a statement from the CM office said.

Jalna has a dry climate, which prevents fungus attacks. Such a climate is most conducive for seed breeding. Market major Mahyco is based out of Jalna.

The statement pointed that the seed park could generate 40,000 jobs and ₹6,000 crore of turnover at Jalna and the larger Marathwada region. The seed park will have processing facilities, dehumidified warehouses, and International Seed Testing Association certified testing labs.
