The South-West monsoon has begun withdrawing after casuing havoc in some regions while leaving parts of North-West and Central India dry.
The uneven spread of rainfall affected sowing of the kharif crop and the government has estimated that output will be lower than last year.

The impact of the surge in monsoon rains in September on the kharif output is also not clear but it helped fill reservoirs across the country, lowering fears of water shortages in the next nine months.
