Farmers boycotted onion auctions at various Agriculture Produce Market Committees (APMC) here today protesting the Union Government’s decision to ban the bulb’s export.

The farmers boycotted the auctions at Lasalgaon, Pimpalgaon, Manmad, Kalwan and other APMCs and urged the Centre to lift the ban with immediate effect contending that they will face huge losses otherwise, APMC sources said.

The sources at Lasalgaon told PTI that no trading was possible since morning.

Onion growers staged a “jail bharo” at Kalwan APMC.

At a Cabinet meeting yesterday, the Government had banned onion exports to control the rising prices.

Yesterday, onions were auctioned between Rs 351 and Rs 1,212 per quintal at the APMCs here.

Meanwhile, the former Nafed Chairman, Mr Changdevrao Holkar, questioned the Government’s decision to ban onion exports saying that the current situation did not warrant such a measure.
