As the peak production period started, growers should make all efforts to get maximum yield from their plantation, advised Rubber Board.
The temporary fluctuations in price need not be a disincentive as the Kerala government has assured that Rubber Production Incentive Scheme will continue, assuring a price of ₹150/kg. Discontinuance or disruption of rubber tapping in the coming months, when yield from rubber shows an upward trend, will cause substantial income loss to farmers.
The Rubber Board has taken several steps to improve production and productivity of NR in the country, in recent months. Production of natural rubber in the first four months of the current fiscal has shown an increase of 4.47 per cent on a year-on-year basis. This indicates that the efforts put in the field have yielded result.
The mass contact programme to popularise low frequency tapping (LFT) to improve profitability, conducted by the Board has received a positive response from rubber growers. About 5,000 growers have come forward to adopt weekly tapping. Rain guarding could still be done so that no tapping days are further lost during the North-East monsoon season.
A scheme for starting ‘Tapper Banks’ in Rubber Producers Societies has also been initiated.
