The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has decided to encourage floriculture in Goa which has huge potential in the State.
“Floriculture is highly neglected in Goa and accounts for less than one per cent of total horticultural crop,” Dr Anjali Parasnis, Fellow and Area convenor, TERI, Mumbai, told PTI.
According to rough estimates, Goa has hardly 25 hectare of area under floriculture with the production of 40 tonnes an year.
Conducive climate
She said that the climate of Goa is highly suitable for cut flowers, loose flowers and cut foliage.
“Jasmine, marigold are traditional flowers grown sporadically in the state for a long time,” Dr Parasnis said.
TERI has decided to undertake several programmes in the State that would encourage floriculture which can fetch good price for the farmers.
Market size
The Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) Director, Dr N.P. Singh, said that Goa has an annual market of Rs 15 crore for flowers, which are brought from neighbouring Maharashtra and Karnataka.
