If you are planning a trip to Mumbai, be ready to cough up more.
The country's financial capital is the most expensive city this summer to spend an evening out. It is followed by Delhi and Chennai. Ahmedabad is your best bargain, with Pune coming next, according to TripAdvisor's travel price index. The index determines the cost for an evening out for two people in these destinations.
The data were collected by the travel site across 48 international tourist cities (including seven metros and 18 holiday spots in India). The index compares rates of hotel room, drinks, dinner and taxis in each destination.
Chennai could give you a sleepless night with the highest hotel tariff among the metros, followed closely by Delhi and Mumbai. The cheapest place to stay is Ahmedabad. A ride in Chennai will also make your wallet whine. Taxis are the most expensive in Chennai; they are the cheapest in Pune. In Mumbai, two martinis would gulp down a lot of money at one shot. So, head to neighbouring Pune for the cheapest tipple.
Grab the cheapest grub in Ahmedabad, while a dinner for two is the costliest in Delhi.
TripAdvisor has also rated popular holiday destinations in India on similar parameters. The most expensive holiday spot is Mahabaleshwar, near Mumbai, followed closely by Kochi.
The most budget-friendly holiday destination in India is Dharamsala, followed by Nashik and Darjeeling.
South India is the most expensive destination (thanks to the upscale resorts in Kerala), followed by West, East and North. Globally, London is the most expensive city, followed by Oslo, Zurich and Paris. Best value destinations are Hanoi, Beijing, Bangkok and Budapest.
How it is calculated
The hotel rate is calculated by taking the average per-night cost at 4-star hotels listed on TripAdvisor.
The drink price is that of two dry martinis from a top-rated 5-star hotel in each destination while dinner rate is the average cost of a meal for two at three mid-range restaurants. The taxi rate is the cost of a two-mile ride.
