The Central Bureau of Investigation on Monday arrested senior IAS officer and Home Secretary of Andhra Pradesh, Mr B. P. Acharya, in the Emaar Properties case.

Mr Acharya was questioned for a couple of hours at the Dilkusha Guest house. He was arrested and produced before a Special CBI court which granted the investigating agency two-day custody of the official.

A 1983 batch officer of the AP cadre, Mr Acharya is the prime accused and fourth to be arrested in the case which pertains to alleged irregularities in land transfer and development and sale of villas and apartments in a township jointly developed by Emaar MGF and Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation.

Mr Acharya served as the Managing Director of APIIC from May 2005 to December 2009. He is alleged to have caused loss to the Government by agreeing for reduction of Government stake from 49 per cent to 26 per cent in the project coming up at Manikonda near here. The CBI had registered a case against the official in August 2011. It had to file a chargesheet before February 1.

He is the second IAS officer to be arrested in scams in the State. Ms Y. Srilakshmi, Principal Secretary, was arrested recently in the illegal mining case in Anantapur involving Obulapuram Mining Company.
