Bachendri Pal, the first woman to climb Mt Everest, came out in support of the Anna Hazare-led anti-corruption movement and sat on a dharna at Sakchi roundabout here today.
Ms Pal, chief of Tata Steel Adventure Sports, was accompanied by Ms Premlata Agarwal, the oldest Indian woman and the first from Jharkhand to climb Mt Everest three months ago, and Bengaluru’s mountaineer-cum-lawyer Ms Kokila Sudha.
Supporting civil society’s Jan Lokpal Bill, Ms Pal said she has been supporting Mr Hazare’s crusade against corruption right from beginning and took part in a dharna physically today for self-satisfaction.
She said a stringent anti-corruption bill had become necessary in the country to check the menace, “which has crossed all limits affecting general masses in the country’’.
Ms Agarwal told PTI “we are raising our voice from roof top in support of Jan Lokpal bill but nothing has happened even after Hazare’s fast for the last ten days”, she said.
A large number of people from all walks of life came out in support of Mr Hazare and took to the streets demanding an effective bill to tackle corruption.
Processions, dharnas and meeting were being organised across Kolkhan division comprising East and West Singhbhum and Saraikela-Kharswan districts of Jharkhand.
