With power demand at an all-time high in the city this month, private discom BSES on Tuesday launched a campaign to educate its over 27 lakh consumers about energy conservation tips.
Under the ‘My Cool Idea' campaign, the company will make the consumers aware of measures such as painting the roof of their houses with white paint, fixing solar film on windows and shading the windows and walls with plants to cut down power consumption.
“Measures like fixing solar film on windows and painting the roofs white can save a lot of energy. Even small measures like not keeping the door of a refrigerator open for long and use of star-rated energy appliances can also minimise energy consumption significantly,” said a BSES official.
With the rise in mercury, the power demand this month has seen a significant rise and on May 18, it touched an all-time high of 4,823 mega watt. Various areas in the city faced power cuts up to seven hours due to gap between demand and supply, but the demand has come down following rains on Saturday and Sunday.
The officials said air-conditioning accounts for 30 to 50 per cent of a company's or household's annual energy costs.
Experts claim that converting 1,000-square-foot roof with white material would offset 10 tonnes of greenhouse gases.
Measures such as cleaning the AC filter every month, keeping the refrigerator away from any heat source including direct sunlight, keeping enough space around the refrigerator for continuous airflow, using a microwave oven instead of a regular oven, can make a lot of difference.
