The Union Cabinet has given its formal nod for cooperation between India and Singapore on industrial property rights intended to boost innovation, creativity and technological advancement in both countries.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for industrial property cooperation between the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion and the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore, approved by the Cabinet on Wednesday, will be signed during Singapore Prime Minister’s visit to India next week.

The MoU will enhance bilateral cooperation activities in the arena of industrial property rights of patents, trademarks and industrial designs, an official release said.

The priority initiatives under the MoU include exchange of best practices, experiences and knowledge on intellectual property awareness among the public, businesses and educational institutions of both countries. Exchange of experts specialised in the field of intellectual property will also take place.

There will be exchange and dissemination of best practices, experiences and knowledge on IP with the industry, universities, R & D organisations and small and medium enterprises.

The Union Cabinet also approved signing of an undertaking between India and Korea on mutual recognition of certificates for seafarers. It will pave way for recognition of maritime education and training, certificates of competency, endorsements, training documentary evidence and medical fitness certificates for seafarers issued by the government of the other country, the release said.
