Petroleum Minister M. Veerappa Moily on Sunday said that the Cabinet would take up the shale gas exploration policy in two weeks.

Currently, there is no commercial exploitation of shale gas in the country. “A draft shale oil/gas policy was placed in public domain. The policy will be announced shortly,” Moily said while addressing the National Editor’s Conference in New Delhi.

The Minister made a reference to the United States on how exploration of shale gas has changed natural gas availability in the country. “They have done it in six years, we can also do that,” he affirmed.

The Director General of Hydrocarbons has taken steps to identify the prospective areas for shale gas exploration and a multi organisational team has been formed to analyse the existing data set and suggest the methodology for its development in the country.
