Kolkata-based MCC Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) is planning to introduce an industry-linked skill development programme in West Bengal.
According to Sanjay Agarwal, newly-elected President of MCCI, and the Managing Director of Century Plyboards (India) Ltd, the chamber may select about 500 youth and request its 700 members to absorb them for training.
“Given the fact that only 20 per cent of the total trained youth are employed in the country (according to a Planning Commission study conducted in 2008), there is a prior need for initiating skill development programmes,” Agarwal told reporters at a press conference here on Monday.
He added that the models and skill development courses organised through Industrial Training Institutes, polytechnics and engineering colleges with active user-industry participation in Gujarat should be adopted.
“We intend to pursue this (Gujarat’s) model of skill development with the West Bengal State government and offer whatever is possible within our means to facilitate,” Agarwal said.
