The Government on Monday said coal supply from Coal India and its subsidiary companies has increased by 8 per cent during April 2012-January 2013.

“During these 10 months 380 million tonnes of coal was supplied by Coal India, whereas last year it was 351 million tonnes,” the Coal Ministry said in a statement.

At the same time, production has increased 5.8 per cent in the same months against the previous year. Coal production during the period increased to 355.31 million tonnes from 335.89 million tonnes of the corresponding period of the previous financial year, the nodal Ministry added.

It is to be seen if Coal India would be able to meet the complete year production target of 464.10 million tonnes. The company has indicated that there may be a shortfall in production.

In January 2013, Coal India produced 46.42 million tonnes of coal against 44.6 million tonnes in the same month last year, an increase of about 4 per cent.

Coal India is flagged for not being able to supply fuel for power generation. But the Ministry mentioned that coal supply to NTPC was 107.5 million tonnes against a target of 102.5 million tonnes. This indicated a 105 per cent achievement of target and growth rate of 16.4 per cent over the same period last year.

The average daily rake loading in January was 210 rakes as against 185 rakes in the corresponding month of the previous year.
