Led by sharp rise in food price inflation, the country's consumer price index (CPI) based inflation spiked to 5.41 per cent.

This was higher than the CPI inflation of 5 per cent in October 2015 and 3.27 per cent in November last year.

Consumer food prices – which had weightage of about 47 per cent in CPI index – grew 6.07 per cent in November 2015 as against 1.13 per cent in November last year.

Several factors are being attributed for the rise in food price inflation including supply disruptions post heavy rains in South India and seasonal trends such as pickup in demand for no-vegetarian protein items in the winter month of November.
