The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's (DMK) ties with the Congress and the UPA alliance at the Centre are unaffected, said the party president, Mr M. Karunanidhi.
High-level committee meeting
Addressing reporters after a high-level committee meeting of the DMK, in which the party passed a resolution criticising the Central Bureau of Investigation involving Kalaignar TV shareholder and DMK Member of Parliament, Ms K, Kanimozhi, and the channel's managing director, Mr Sharad Kumar, as a part of the probe into the 2G spectrum scam, he said a decision on issues such as political alliance can be taken only by the General Council.
The high-level committee meeting was conducted against the backdrop of the Delhi High Court denying bail to Ms Kanimozhi, daughter of Mr Karunanidhi, as also to Mr Sharad Kumar. Both face charges of involvement in flow of funds of about Rs 200 crore, a part of money relating to the 2G scam in which Mr A. Raja, a DMK MP and former communications minister in the UPA has been arrested.
Ms Dayalu Ammal, wife of Mr Karunanidhi, a major stake holder in the TV channel, has been named a witness by the CBI.
Mr Karunanidhi categorically stated that the party's ties with the Congress at the Centre were not affected by the developments relating to the CBI investigation.
Also, issues such as alliance at the Centre will have to be taken up in the general council.
10-day campaign
The DMK has convened meeting of the general body next month which will follow a 10-day campaign by the party on its stand relating to the 2G scam .
In the resolution relating to the 2G issue, one of ten dealing with a range of topics, DMK said it was wrong on the part of the CBI to involve Ms Kanimozhi and Mr Sharad Kumar in the investigation.
The fund received by the TV channel was part of a business deal which was an open transaction through banks.
Also, legal experts have pointed out that the CBI had argued for the arrest of individuals who had not been arrested during the investigation but were responding to a ‘summon' by the Court. While condemning the CBI on these two grounds, the issue would be appealed in the Supreme Court, the resolution said.
