Spot electricity prices traded at the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) saw a drastic fall in June.
The average prices have fallen to as low as Rs 1.93/kWh in the Eastern region to Rs 4.42/kWh in the Southern region. “On an overall basis in terms of volume of power traded, the northern and southern regions were net buyers of power, while the eastern, western and the north-eastern region were net sellers of power,” IEX said in a statement.
While there has been an overall fall in prices of electricity bought through the IEX last month, the fall in prices in the Southern region was significant.
From an average price of Rs 6–7/kWh in the previous months, the average price in June has come down to Rs 4.42/kWh for the southern region. The onset of the monsoon, which brings down demand, along with increased availability of wind power in the area during the monsoon period, is cited as the major reason for the fall in prices.
