The > Economic Survey has indicated that the telecom services segment is expected to see a rebound in 2012-13 after a disappointing last year.
According to the Survey, profits of telecom services companies are expected to grow 39 per cent this year. Last year, the sector’s cumulative profit-after-tax had declined 71 per cent, the Survey said citing an analysis done by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE).
Spectrum issues
Overall, the Survey sounds positive for the communications sector but it is silent on key challenges facing the sector including spectrum pricing. It is also silent on the failed auctions and the loss of investments made by foreign players.
Instead the Survey has focused on the achievements of the Government.
“The telecom sector has been one of the fastest growing sectors in recent years. It is now the second largest telephone network in the world, after only China. A series of reform measures by the government, wireless technology, and active participation by the private sector played an important role in the exponential growth of the telecom sector in the country,’’ it said.
