Pitching for simpler tax laws, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Monday said the government is examining the recommendations of the Parthasarathi Shome committee on tax administration reforms.

“The Shome Committee has given recommendations that we are looking into,” he said at the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, stressing that the “image of an oppressive tax man should not hover over us”.

Simple tax laws will also help cut down litigation and improve tax collections, he said.

Meanwhile, ahead of the Union Budget 2016-17, the Finance Minister also noted that the number of tax assessees in India is very low.

“Compared to a society of 1.2 billion, are we a society with too few assessees?” he asked, noting that a large number of families have only one tax assessee.
