Chief of global nuclear watchdog IAEA Yukiya Amano is arriving on a five-day visit to India beginning Monday.
Amano, who was re-elected as the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency on Wednesday, is expected to hold discussions on nuclear safety and related issues with Indian leaders in Mumbai and New Delhi.
He is also scheduled to deliver the Indian Nuclear Society Silver Jubilee lecture on ‘IAEA Perspectives on Future of Nuclear Energy’ in Mumbai on Monday.
Amano is visiting India at the invitation of Atomic Energy Commission Chairman R.K. Sinha.
Experts from the IAEA had carried out a review of operational safety measures at two 220 MW units of the Rajasthan Atomic Power Station last year.
India is also considering inviting the IAEA for carrying out a peer review of its regulatory system with a special focus on its ability to ensure the safety of nuclear power plants.
“Preparation and planning for inviting IAEA’s Integrated Regulatory Review Service for peer review of our regulatory system is in progress, and in due course, India will approach the agency with a request to undertake this mission,” a senior official had said recently.
