Continuing with its mission of ensuring gender diversity in the intake of students, the Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode (IIM-K) has increased the number of girls in the new batch for 2011-2013.
In the institute's 15th batch for post-graduate programme, girls account for 35 per cent of the total intake as against 30 per cent in the previous batch. Out of the total 341 students given admission to the course, 121 are girls and 84 of them have Common Admission Test percentile between 90 and 100, according to a statement from the institute.
Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, Director, says that giving prominence to girl students in the admissions to IIM-K has become a trend-setter and the institute had the maximum number of girl students among all IIMs last year. “The girls have always performed better than boys and even in summer placements, girls have been placed in better companies,” he says.
Out of the total 121 girls students, 91 have engineering background, while 15 are either commerce or economics graduates. Three are doctors and one did graduation in law.
The institute has also maintained social diversity in the intake of students by ensuring significant representation from lower income groups. The parents of 7.94 per cent of the students have an annual income of less than Rs 1 lakh, while the parents of 25 per cent earn Rs 10 lakh and above. The rest of the students have parents with an annual income of Rs 4-5 lakh (12.70 per cent) and Rs 5-6 lakh (8.73 per cent).
“It is truly a transformation process at IIM-K whereby students whose parental income is less than Rs 1 lakh an year end up with top jobs around the world,” says Prof. Chatterjee.
The maximum number of students are from Delhi (12.65 per cent), followed by Maharashtra (12.05 per cent). Students from Uttar Pradesh comprise 9.71 per cent of the total strength. The Kerala Government has invited IIM-K to conduct day-long leadership programme for the entire Cabinet.
