India challenges US tariffs at WTO
Mounting pressure on the US to roll back higher import duties on Indian steel and aluminium products announced in March, New Delhi has dragged Washington to the Dispute Settlement Body of the World Trade Organization to sort out the matter. The move comes less than a week after India threatened to impose additional duties of 5-50 per cent on 20 items imported from the US, including almonds and motor cycles, equivalent to the effect the US measures will have on India’s trade. “India has requested WTO dispute consultations with the US regarding duties on certain imported steel and aluminium products. The request was circulated to WTO members on May 23,” an official WTO communication stated. Amiti Sen
