Shourya (valour), the hypersonic, nuclear capable, surface-to-surface missile, with a range of 700 km was successfully flight tested by the Indian Defence scientists today.
This was the third launch of the 10-metre tall missile since its first in November 2008. The success of all three flights signals the readiness for the user (Indian Navy and Army) to induct the DRDO-developed missile. Shourya can carry both nuclear and conventional warheads and is the land-variant of the K-15 underwater missile that is being fitted into India's nuclear-powered submarine, Arihant.
According to the DRDO scientists, the missile was launched from a canister at around 2.30 p.m. from the launch complex at ITR Balasore, off the Orissa coast. The DRDO Chief Controller (Missiles and Strategic Systems), Mr Avinash Chander, said the flight met all the mission objectives and it was tracked all through.
