The hiring scenario across the country has seen an over 10 per cent increase in May 2013 compared to the same period last year. The annual growth has been backed by increased hiring in IT-enabled services (56 per cent) and healthcare (47 per cent).

However, on a month-on-month comparison between April and May there was a dip of 4 per cent, a report by online job portal Naukri.com said.

“The over 10 per cent year-on-year upswing in hiring is a positive trend and employers seem to be following a cautious approach while keeping a close watch on the macroeconomic environment. Given the weak economic environment in 2012-13, any job creation is a positive sign,” Ambarish Raghuvanshi, CFO, Info Edge (India) said. Info Edge India runs the online job portal Naukri.com

Amongst the cities that saw an annual increase , Delhi-NCR saw a 26 per cent increase followed by Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata. The three cities saw an average increase from 11 – 12 per cent, the report mentions.

Mumbai, Chennai and Pune, however, witnessed a decline of 3 per cent, 4 per cent and 6 per cent, on a year-on-year basis.

Sectoral picture

Apart from ITeS and healthcare, banking and financial services, education and IT/Software services were amongst the few verticals that saw good growth on a year-on-year basis, the Naukri Job Speak Index report said.

According to the report, the banking and financial services sector saw a 23 per cent increase in May 2013 over the same period last year. Education saw a year-on-year growth of 40 per cent. Oil & gas, auto and insurance, the report maintained, were among the sectors that saw less hiring on a year-on-year- basis. Between May 2013 and the corresponding period last year, the oil & gas sector saw a 21 per cent dip followed by 11 per cent in auto and another 8 per cent in insurance.

Comparisons between April and May 2013 however reveal a dip in hiring activity.

While Delhi and NCR managed to register a month-on-month growth of mere 2 per cent, all other cities that include Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune and Kolkata reported a decline in hiring activity. Similarly, the sectoral hiring scenario too saw a major upheaval. While ITeS & BPO (10.5 per cent) segment saw an increase in hiring; Production & Maintenance saw stable hiring (1 per cent) between April and May this year.

Other major sectors like Sales, Banking, Marketing and IT saw a dip of 5 per cent, 14 per cent, 7 per cent and 6 per cent respectively. (April to May)
