Country’s largest container port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) today said un-documented export containers taken to the privately operated APM Terminal are the chief cause for congestion on its approach roads.
“The parking of trucks carrying un-documented export containers on approach roads to JNPT terminals (mainly to APM terminals) was found to be one of the main causes of congestion,” the port in a statement issued here.
The port, which handles approximately 60 per cent of the country’s container traffic and is increasingly facing competition from the aggressive private players, had convened a meeting of all stakeholders to resolve the issue, it said.
Port chairman, L Radhakrishanan chaired the meeting where it was decided to segregate trucks without proper documents and move them to a parking area in order to clear the approach roads for trucks with correct documents for shipment to reach the terminals on time, the release said.
“The congestion outside JN Port area was a temporary phenomenon due to illegal parking of those tractor trailers without proper documentation for export cargo at the road side,” it said, identifying the cause.
APM Terminals Mumbai is a joint venture between APM Terminals and Container Corporation of India and has been appointed to build and operate a container terminal at JNPT under a 30 years concession period agreement.
