Joining the Clean India campaign, former President Mr APJ Abdul Kalam today advocated power generation from municipal waste describing it as a rich source of energy and asked the Tourism Ministry to work with the banking sector for setting up mini power plants for the purpose.

“India needs thousands of mini power plants using municipal waste in small towns and urban areas. Tourism Ministry has to work with banking sector for promoting creation of such power plants in major municipalities with the collaboration of small and medium enterprises, Mr Kalam said here at the Clean India campaign workshop organised by the Tourism Ministry.

Focusing on the importance of cleanliness, he said clean environment empowers societies.

“Our growth has to be sustainable and also must ensure that it does not make environment non-liveable for posterity.

Nation has to ensure that we are in a clean-green environment which will attract national and international tourists to our tourism centres,” Mr Kalam said.

Sharing his experience on promotion of tourism as a holistic package, he cited the programmes of electricity generation through municipal waste, fly ash clearing leading to an economic activity and the synergy mission for environmental upgradation.

“While being a threat to the environment, mounting garbage is also a rich source of energy,” he said.

Referring to an indigenous solution for the processing of waste into a source of fuel, he said “number of plants is coming in our urban areas which will not only promote clean India campaign but also provide energy which is vital for our growth.”
