The Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr B.S. Yeddyurappa, has said that the State Government is ready to recover the loss incurred through illegal mining and export of iron ore, mentioned in the interim report of the Supreme Court-appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC). It will wait for the direction of the Supreme Court in this matter.
Speaking to presspersons during his visit to Mangalore on Saturday, Mr Yeddyurappa said the CEC report puts the nominal value of illegally exported iron ore from Karnataka at Rs 15,000 crore. The Government is ready to impose a fine six times of the value, and will wait for directions from the Supreme Court in this matter, he said.
Based on the CEC report on illegal mining, a three-member Supreme Court Bench had sought the response of the Karnataka Government by April 21.
To this, Mr Yeddyurappa said that the Government will extend all its cooperation. The Karnataka Government is ready to implement the directions of the Supreme Court on illegal mining and exports, he said.
Curbing illegal mining
Urging the Centre to solve the problem of illegal mining elsewhere in the country also, the Chief Minister said he had asked the Prime Minister just this at the National Development Council meeting on July 24, 2010. He had also suggested that steps be taken to set up value-added industries. However, there had been no action, he claimed.
