Kolkata sees stable hiring in August

Kolkata was the only city in the country that saw stable hiring in August, according to a report by job portal Naukri.com.

According to Naukri Job Speak index, the city saw 18 per cent growth in jobs in the IT and IT-enabled services sector against the same period last year.

Hiring has gone up by nearly 7 per cent in the city across all sectors in August compared with July.

However, the overall hiring across the country dropped by 4 per cent in August compared with July after remaining flat for five consecutive months.

“Most recruiters are staffing smartly and opting for replacement hiring instead of recruiting new members,” Hitesh Oberoi, managing director and CEO of Info Edge India, said. Naukri.com is flagship brand of Info Edge.

According to the index, construction and engineering sectors saw 13 per cent month-on-month dip.

Oil and gas, BPO, telecom and auto sector witnessed 6 to 9 per cent drop respectively. Software services and insurance jobs were hit by an average month-on-month 2 per cent dip.

Interestingly, banking sector saw 12 per cent growth in hiring with the PSU banks creating more jobs.
