The Union Territory of Lakshwadeep has joined the Centre’s power distribution company revival scheme, Ujwal Discom Assurance Yojana (UDAY).

An official statement said that the UT will derive an overall net benefit of Rs 8 crore through joining UDAY. A MoU has been signed between the Centre and the UT for the operational turnaround of the Union Territory’s electricity department.

Lakshwadeep will gain by way of cheaper funds, reduction in aggregate technical and commercial losses (AT&C) losses, interventions in energy efficiency, among others. The reduction in AT&C losses to 10 per cent is likely to bring an additional revenue of around Rs 3 crore during the period of turnaround.

The MoU paves the way for improving the operational efficiency. Through compulsory distribution transformer metering, consumer indexing & GIS mapping of losses, upgrade/change transformers, smart metering of high-end consumers, feeder audit and others, transmission losses would be brought down, besides eliminating the gap between the cost of supply of power and realisation, the statement added.
