Amid poor showing of Left parties in West Bengal, the CPI (M)-led Left Front in the North Eastern state of Tripura has own both the Lok Sabha seats, with larger vote share.
State Commerce and Industry Minister Jitendra Choudhury has own from East Tripura, while trade unionist Sankar Prasad Dutta won from West Tripura. Both are fielded by CPI(M).
Despite a four-cornered fight - between Left, Congress, Trinamool Congress and BJP – the party’s vote share has increased from 61.69 per cent in 2009 to 64.5 per cent in 2014. BJP’s vote share has improved from 3.38 per cent to 5.5 per cent.
“The higher vote share is an endorsement of our pro-poor development activities,” Choudhury told Business Line over phone.
He is hopeful that the Narendra Modi Government will work on the dual objective of removing the infrastructure gap of North East and improving relationship with Bangladesh, to help the region grow.
