Bengal Tiger Line on Friday commenced a regular container feeder service between Marg Karaikal Port and Colombo.
The service was launched with the 1,900-TEU (twenty foot equivalent unit) vessel Tiger Bridge making a maiden call at the port, which is located nearly 250 km south of Chennai in Puducherry.
The feeder vessel is expected to call the port every fortnight (every alternate Friday) and later become a weekly service as volumes stabilise, says a press release issued by the port.
The inaugural call saw export of 50 containers of cement of CMA-CGM, the French container shipping giant. Continuing and strengthening its presence in handling liquid cargo, the newly constructed Tankages in the port has augmented the total capacity of port to 19,000 cbm.
The commissioning of the new oil tankages was marked with the arrival of first shipment of Crude Palmolein vide vessel Maple for the company Bunge. Also, the port is regularly handling Refined Edible Oil for KTV Health Pvt. Ltd, the release said. Food Corporation of India has shipped wheat from the port – over 1.25 lakh tonnes have been exported.
