The Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) suffered nearly Rs 45-crore loss after agitating fishermen blocked the entry channel for barges at Khariwada in Vasco, south Goa, on Friday and Saturday.
The fishermen were protesting over demolition of their houses coming under the MPT jurisdiction. “After a joint meeting of the Port officials, State Government officials, representatives of the agitating fishermen and Mormugao Muncipal Council representatives on Saturday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Mr Digambar Kamat where an amicable solution was worked out, the strike was called off and the MPT resumed its operations,” Mr P. Mara Pandiyan, Chairman of MPT, told Business Line on Saturday evening.
A spokesman of the Goa Government said that at the meeting convened by the Chief Minister, it was decided that the State Government would approach the Centre to remove the jurisdiction of the MPT over the Khariwado area so as to save remaining houses of fishermen.
