Denmark's Maersk Line, the world's number one container shipping line, proposes to slap peak season surcharge on all containerised shipments from India to the US, Canada and Guam, according to shipping industry sources.
The surcharge on dry and reefer cargo, to be effective from July 15, will be $320/TEU, $400/FEU, $450 for a 40-ft high cube container and $505 for a 45-ft high cube container and will remain in force until further notice.
Capacity pressure, coupled with trade demand, is believed to have prompted the shipping line to announce the surcharge, the sources add.
In July last year, Maersk had announced freight increases on shipments from North America (including Canada) to India and the increases ranged between $120 and $400 for a TEU and between $150 and $400 for a FEU, high cube and 45-ft containers. For 40-ft high cube refrigerated containers, the increase was $500 a container for most commodities with minor difference from Canada.
