Construction of an offshore container terminal in Mumbai port is likely to be completed by December. Due to delays by the build, operate and transfer operator and dredging contractor, the Rs 1,400-crore project got delayed.
According to the licence agreement signed between the Mumbai Port Trust and Indira Container Terminal Pvt Ltd, the berth should have been commissioned long ago.
It has now been rescheduled to December. Both the Ministry of Shipping and the Mumbai Port Trust are monitoring the progress of the work.
The project comprises 700 metres quay length in the first phase extendable to 1,050 metre subsequently in the Mumbai harbour. The Mumbai Port Trust has appointed an independent engineer for approval of designs, quality control and monitoring progress of the operator. A project management consultant has also been appointed for preparation of estimates, tenders and supervision of works for the Mumbai port component, according to a government press release.
