The Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone Ltd (MPSEZL), India's largest private multi-port operator and subsidiary of the flagship Adani Enterprises Ltd, leading infrastructure conglomerate, on Monday said that Mundra Port handled more than 50 million tonnes (m.t.) of cargo in 2010-11.

The cargo volumes at Mundra Port have leaped from 11.7 m.t. in 2005-06 to over 50 m.t. now, a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 34 per cent. In the same period, the maritime trade of the country grew at a rate close to 8.5 per cent. By crossing the 50 m.t. mark, it has emerged as the seventh largest port in terms of annual cargo handling volumes for the fiscal 2010-11.

“We are aiming at handling 200 million m.t. by 2020 at ports managed by the company,” Mr Gautam Adani, Chairman, Adani Group, said here.

New berths

Mundra Port handles a variety of cargo like crude oil, petroleum products, chemicals, edible oil, coal, fertilisers, steel, containers, and automobiles. It has 13 berths for handling bulk, liquid and container cargo, two single point mooring units, a RO-RO terminal for automobile handling and a fully-automated 60 m.t. dedicated coal terminal with two berths.

The company is developing six more berths for handling bulk/container cargo and enhancing capacity of coal terminal to 100 m.t. The company expects to handle 80 m.t. cargo in 2011-12 and cross the 100 m.t. mark by 2012-13. This will make Mundra the preferred port of call by 2012-13, handling highest cargo volumes amongst Indian ports.

During 2010-11, MPSEZL commissioned a 20 m.t. bulk cargo handling terminal at Dahej. It is currently developing a multi-cargo port at Hazira with Hazira Port Private Ltd as its partner, a 5-m.t. LNG terminal at Mundra, and a coal terminal each at Marmugao in Goa and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

The company is also developing India's largest multi-product SEZ at Mundra, which will have the advantage of trade flows using the port at the site, and the rail and road connectivity to the respective national networks developed for the port.
