The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has pleaded for the introduction of a bullet train between Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram via Madurai.
In a statement here, the chamber said that “it is critical that such high-speed bullet train should also be introduced in Chennai-Dindigul-Madurai-Kovilpatti-Nagercoil-Tiruvananthapuram corridor. Lack of adequate and modern infrastructures continues to retard industrial growth in southern Tamil Nadu.
The line has highest passenger traffic. Approximately one lakh passengers travel daily to Chennai in the Madurai-Chennai sector generating Rs. 2.3 crore revenue to Southern Railway.
A pre-feasibility study would reveal the introduction of such bullet train is technically feasible and economically viable.
Moreover it will also boost tourism growth and catalyse industrial upgradation in the area.
The chamber urged the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa, to take up the matter with the Railway Ministry and insist for inclusion of this corridor also for pre-feasibility study by the Railways.
