The second day of the two-day nationwide strike called by trade unions and labour groups has affected normal port operations in the city’s two major ports.
Operations at the Mumbai Port and the country’s largest container port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port, remained muted because of the major participation of worker unions in the strike.
“The strike has hit revenue earnings to the tune of Rs 50 crore for both the ports,” the Transport & Dock Worker’s Union, Mumbai, said in a release. It also added that the strike was likely to affect revenues to the extent of Rs 100 crore across all major ports in the country.
The union demanded that the Government speed up ongoing wage negotiations for port and dock workers. The union also demanded that the Government fill up vacancies, allow autonomous functioning of major ports and also stop hiring contract labour for work of a perennial nature.
