V.O. Chidambaranar Port, Tuticorin, created a new national record in handling of hard-wood logs on February 15.
A release form the port said that 8,437 tonnes of hard-wood logs of 8,950 cubic m were discharged from the vessel MV Urawee Naree, the highest ever in a day in a major port, thus breaking its own record achieved on January 1 this year (7,839 tonnes of pine-wood timber of 8,312 cubic m, discharged from MV Suchada Naree).
A high level of mechanisation introduced in the port with four specially designed log-grapple attachment imported from Germany and Volvo cranes for shore-handling used in the operation, vast open space at the berth and high productivity of labour helped achieve this record. Farlin Timbers Pte Ltd, Singapore, were the supplier of this consignment meant for importers throughout Tamil Nadu.
