V.O. Chidambaranar Port (formerly Tuticorin Port) has created a national record in handling of pinewood timber on the New Year Day.
It discharged 7,839 tonnes of pine wood timber of 8,312 cu.m., from the vessel “MV SUCHADA NAREE” on January 1, the highest-ever achieved in a single day in the major ports of the country, said a release from the port.
The previous record in timber handling in the port was 6,532 tonnes on March 15, 2011, from the Vessel “MV ALAM SENANG. This record achievement was possible due to the high level of mechanisation introduced in the port for handling of the cargo – 4 Nos. of specially designed log grapple attachment imported from Germany and Volvo trucks for shore handling used in the operation, vast open space available at the berth and the high productivity labour available in the port.
The logs were imported from New Zealand for consignees located in Chennai and Madurai, the release added.
