Air India will operate an additional direct flight between Kolkata and Yangon from Wednesday.

Currently, it operates two flights a week — on Mondays and Fridays.

According to an Air India spokesperson, the additional flight will be in service till September considering the growth in demand. The Kolkata-Yangon direct flight will now be available thrice a week.

Air India may also continue the service beyond September if there are more flyers , the spokesperson added.

Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) recently urged Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ajit Singh to introduce an additional flight on Wednesdays on this route in view of the increasing prospects for bilateral trade between India and Myanmar. According to one of the ICC members who approached the aviation minister, Singh has promised them that he would look into the matter soon.

The ICC member said that increasing air connectivity to Myanmar is strategically important for the land-locked North-Eastern States and it would also offer better access to ASEAN markets.

According to the chamber , introduction of the additional service will benefit the Indian business travellers since the fare via Bangkok is almost double than that of a direct flight.
