1932: Tata Airlines came into being as a division of Tata Sons Ltd and started mail services on the Karachi-Ahmedabad, Bombay, Bellary and Madras route on October 15.

1933: In its first full year of operations, Tata Airlines flew 1.6 lakh miles carrying 155 passengers and 10.71 tonnes of mail.

1946: On July 29, Tata Airlines was converted into a public company and renamed Air India Ltd.

1953: Parliament passed the Air Corporations Act in March.

1953: President ratified the Act on May 28.

1953: In June, two corporations-- Air India International Ltd and Indian Airlines Corporation Ltd – formally came into existence.

1953: Air India International Ltd was nationalised in August. J.R.D. Tata was appointed the Chairman, and B.K. Patel, the Vice-Chairman and General Manager.
