Indian Railways has been introducing many gastronomic options for passengers, including tying up with chains such as McDonalds and KFC.
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has announced that the Railways will now cater to children, with specific menus for them, even providing baby food, hot milk and hot water for families travelling with infants.
The Minister, while announcing the initiative, said this would “mitigate the hardships that mothers undergo while travelling with their infants”. Train toilets, which are fast being modernised with bio-toilets, would also have changing boards for babies.
Sisir Paul, Senior Consultant, Max Institute of Paediatrics, said that this was a good move to ensure that children do not suffer short-term lack of food while on the move.
Taking cognisance of hygiene concerns, over the last few years Railway Budgets have been expanding use of bio-toilets.
The minister announced that this year 30,000 bio-toilets would be installed at railway stations as well as on trains.
